CHANCHAL EDUCATIONAL AND SOCIAL WELFARE TRUST

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE ACTIVITIES OF THE SOCIETY/TRUST BODY

Promoting education in the area predominantly inhabited by minority, OBC and SC/ST community is the main activity and goal of the trust. Social services like campaign on health awareness among illiterate and poor women are one of the main activities of the trust. The rate of institutional delivery is very low in the area. Particularly the pregnant mother from downtrodden Muslim community has a tendency towards avoiding institutional delivery causing high rate of infant mortality rate in the community. Due to age-old custom and superstitions pregnant mothers feel hesitated to take advantages of the heath care facilities provided by the Government. The members of the Trust, particularly the lady members take part in spreading consciousness on heath and child care issues among illiterate women of weaker sections of the area. They encourage them to access the scientific methods and facilities in the Heath Centres run by the government. AIDS awareness campaign, campaign for importance and need of family planning, conducting Football and other outdoor games among local youths for promoting and preserving the atmosphere of brotherhood and mutual trust and faith in the community are the important activates of the Trust.

JUSTIFICATION FOR A NEW COLLEGE AND ITS VIABILITY

The total population of Malda District is approximately 33 lakh whereas the number of B.Ed College is 07(Seven) which is insufficient for the graduate and undergraduate candidates of the district who wish to pursue the teacher’s training education. The situation in the Chanchal Sub-Division is far worse as there is not a single B.Ed college in the Sub-Division where 11 lakh people reside. Approximately 1000 students graduate every year from the degree colleges situated at Chanchal and its neighbouring areas. Due to scarcity of B.Ed. colleges in the region, the aspirants have to go to other Districts or even other States to get a B.Ed. degree which involves a handsome expenditure of money. Consequently, a good no of economically backward but eligible and meritorious candidates cannot go ahead and pursue their dreams. The establishment of a B.Ed. college at Chanchal will thus provide opportunities to the youths of the region to fulfil their dreams of attaining the Bachelor degree in education as well the becoming a teacher in true sense of the meaning without much hassle. And above all, as the area is predominantly occupied by minority and Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe people, the establishment of a B.Ed. college at Chanchal will serve the Minority committee as well as the SC and ST community living in the locality.

The proposed site of the college is situated in a calm, quiet, noise-free and peaceful area, free from any pollution hazards. The place is neither over crowded nor cut off from the main town. The basic amenities (viz. safe drinking water, electricity) required for establishment of an educational institution are available. Underground water is available throughout the year and high voltage electricity is available at the site. The proposed site of Chanchal Bed College, located on the NH 81, is 4 km away from the main town of Chanchal. It is situated in the north-west of Chanchal town towards Harischandrapur. The site is also connected with the NH 34 at Gazole. The two railway Stations namely, Samsi and Harischandrapur are located at distances of 16 km and 11 km from the site respectively.

Thus the proposed college has both the road and rail communication. Due to good and easily-accessible road and rail communication the intending students from nearby Chanchal –I, Chanchal-II, Harischandgapur-I,Harischandrapur-II and Ratua block can easily take the benefit of the College. Moreover, students from neighbouring District of Uttar Dinajpur and the State of Bihar can also avail the service of the college. Keeping the above-mentioned facts in mind the Chanchal Educational and Social Welfare Trust decided to establish a B.Ed. College and subsequently applied before the ERC,NCTE for grant of recognition of the college with intake of 100.
